Debbie Burbage Recruitment Interview Tips

1. Research The Company

If you are eager to get a new job and have sent your CV off to many different companies and job applications it can be difficult to keep up with the jobs you have applied for. If you receive a response to your job application and have been asked to attend an interview you should always have time to prepare for that interview. The most important preparation is researching the company and the job role you have applied for.  Researching the company will help you in the interview and will strengthen your responses to questions asked.

2. Prepare Answers to Frequent Interview Questions

After several interviews you will soon realise that most job interviews will cover several areas which include very similar interview questions. Areas usually covered in a job interview will be to find out about the interviewee, their skills, personal interests, career history, experience and their general ability to do the job that they have applied to as well as other job roles such as working as a team and working under any pressure or to a strict deadline.

3. Dress to Impress

What you wear is important to any job application. Even if you are told that you are not required to wear business clothing, it is always best to look like you have made an effort for that job interview. At Debbie Burbage Recruitment we suggest you dress to impress and make sure that you stand out above the rest of the candidates. Prepare what you plan to wear in advance and choose something that will get you noticed, smart and colourful will always make you stand out and will get you noticed.

4. Smile with Confidence

A simple smile can be such a powerful tool in any job interview. A smile will make you look approachable, likeable and friendly to the interviewer/s. A smile can also give you the confidence you need in the job interview and can help you overcome any interview nerves. Standing straight and tall can also give you confidence and can make you stand out above other candidates that may be showing signs of nervousness and being unconfident.

5. Prepare in Advance

The worst thing that you can do is turn up to a job interview having not prepared. As soon as you have been informed of an interview and been given a date, make sure that you start planning in advance. Prepare by researching the company and making notes which you can take with you. Practice some frequent interview questions and make notes of your answers so that you can always use these to refer to in your job interview.

6. Be on Time

Punctuality is important to any job interview. Make sure that you are there between 15- 20 minutes early so that you have time to relax, have a drink of water or use the toilets if you need to. Even if the interviewer is running late at least you are there on time and the interviewer has more than likely been informed on your arrival, in which case they will take note of the time.

7. Ask Questions

At the end of most job interviews you will be asked if you have any questions. In many cases nerves overcome you and you can’t think what to say. Unfortunately this doesn’t look good to the interviewer and it makes you look as though you are disinterested. The best thing to do is plan in advance what you would like to ask and take a few questions with you written down in your notes so that you have the confidence to ask a question or two.

8. Make Notes of the Interview

In most cases the interviewer will be the one making notes about you which they will look back on when making a final decision on which candidate to accept. You don’t have to just sit there answering the questions, you can also make notes. Notes will look like you are paying attention to what is being said. Any notes you take are always good to look back on and will help you in any future job interviews and will help if you are called back to a second interview.

9. Keep Focus

Keep your focus on the day of your interview. Make sure that you are prepared with a copy of your CV, your job application, a notebook and a couple of pens (just in case one runs out of ink). Always pay attention to the interviewer, making sure that you are looking at them directly in the eye. If you look as though you are completely blank in the face then they could presume that you are not serious about the job application.

10. Be Positive

Keeping positive will give you the confidence that you need in life. A popular saying is to be excited and not nervous. Going into any job interview in a negative way, feeling as though you are not going to get that job will only result in a poor performance. End the interview in a positive way saying that you look forward to hearing from them regarding the job application

Be Confident. Be Excited. Be Positive. And… Smile!
