Make Yourself Stand Out in a Job Interview

Once you finish school, college or university and you have finished all of your exams. You think all of your worrying is over, no more nerve wrecking timed exams, lengthy coursework or worrying presentations. Don’t be fooled as it is not over yet. Job interviews can be one of the most nervous experiences in life as you are given a chance of employment and if you take one wrong step then you may have missed your chance.

At Debbie Burbage we have put together a guide on how to stand out in a job interview and how to make those nerves go away. Follow this guide in your next interview and you should fly through the day with confidence, excitement and high hopes.

Be Excited Not Nervous

This saying can help rest your mind on the day of your job interview. Keep saying to yourself “be excited not nervous” and this will help you get through the day. You are tricking your mind and making yourself feel excitement for the job interview rather than feel nervous. You should feel excited – especially if it is a job you would absolutely love to have, why would you not be excited at this opportunity?

Dress to Impress

Make yourself stand out in your next job interview by dressing to impress. Don’t wear something boring and black like the rest of the candidates, make yourself stand out in colour. For men this can be a nice subtle grey suit with a bright shirt and tie and for women this can be a nice colourful dress with a smart jacket.

Prepare your outfit in advance so you know what you are going to wear. It is important that you are comfortable in what you decide to wear to your job interview, because if you feel uncomfortable then you will lack confidence. Make sure that you also check the dress code as this will instantly put yourself in front of other candidates and your possible competition.

Revise, Revise, Revise!

Swap evenings in front of the television to evenings filled with revision. Make sure that you know the company that you are applying for inside out so that you can answer any questions the interviewer may ask you. This will also increase your confidence and can put you in higher position to other candidates that have not been so prepared. The internet is filled with information on many different companies so you will be able to find all the information that you need. It might be worth gaining awareness of any competitors to the company you are applying for which will help you in an interview.

Stand Straight and Tall

Standing straight and tall can help you gain confidence for your job interview. You will appear to be professional and it will make you feel good about yourself. Being slumped does not give you a good appearance and makes you look uninterested in the job you are applying for. With women, a pair of heels can help you stand straight and tall and can make you look serious about the job application. It can also keep you at the same level as those interviewing you, if you were to wear flat shoes then the employers will often tower over you making you feel belittled, giving you less confidence.

Follow these simple tips and look forward to your next job interview which you will be able to go into with confidence.
